Answer: 9. a. Mother has been portrayed in the story as a very frugal/economical woman who did not want to buy things without any realistic purpose. She remained firm in her decision of not buying any useless things despite her daughter’s repeated insisting.
b. No, I don’t think Rosamond finally picked the right choice because the purple jar was not urgent for her to buy at that time. On the other hand, she needed a pair of shoes immediately as they were already worn out. It seemed that she was moved by emotion, not by reason.
c. I think Rosamond’s mother wanted her to buy only one item because her mother was very economical. She wanted to instill frugality in her daughter’s lifestyle. Another interpretation may be that because of having not enough she asked her daughter to buy only one item.
d. Rosamond’s hasty decision to buy the jar without examining it was an act of folly and this was the reason of her utter disappointment.
e. Shylock agreed to lend the money on the condition that if Antonio failed to repay the money within three months, Shylock would cut a pound of flesh from any part of Antonio’s body.
f. Shylock plays the role of antagonist. He creates a conflict by demanding a dangerous penalty if Antonio cannot repay the loan. This demand drives much of the story’s tension. Thus, his role contributes to the development of the story.
g. Three people attempted to choose the right casket. The first person found a picture of skull inside of the gold casket where it was written, “All that glitters is not gold”. The second person found a line written over the silver casket that, “He who chooses me will get what he deserves”, but opening it found a picture of a blinking fool. The third person found the portrait of Portia inside the lead casket.
h. The joyous mood of Belmont turned into sadness as a messenger from Antonio came to Belmont to give a letter to Bassanio. The letter carried tragic news about Antonio and his ships.
